Manolo Mejía was born in May 21, 1965, in Tacuba, Mexico City. When he was 8, he started fighting cows at Plaza Antonio Velazquez, that is in Chucho Arroyo's restaurant. When he was 15, he made his debut as a novillero (In May 25, 1980) at Plaza La Florecita of Cuidad Satelite, Mexico. In that time, he had fought 45 festivales and a lot of ranch's fights.
He was at Plaza Mexico for the first time in August 16, 1981. He fought four novilladas and, in the fourth, a novillo from Tepetzala's ranch hurts him for the first time in his life. He was awarded a tail at Plaza Mexico for the first time in August 16, 1981. The novillo was from Manolo Martinez's ranch.
He received the alternativa in January 22, 1983 at Plaza La Luz in Leon Guanajuato. The godfather was Eloy Cavazos, with Antonio Lomelín and Miguel Espinosa "Armillita" as witnesses. Bulls were from San Martin's ranch. He confirmed the alternativa at Plaza Mexico in January 22, 1985. The godfather was the Spaniard Antonio Chenel "Antoñete" and the witness was Eloy Cavazos. Bulls were from Santiago's ranch.
When he underwent initial steps in bullfighting, everybody thought he was going to be a great bullfighter immediately, but he wasn't. People who like bullfighting had to wait some years for the great bullfighter. That's why he fought in the Oportunity Thrusday's Bullfight in October 5, 1993. If he hadn't triumphed that day, he would have quit bullfighting. But he had. He was awarded an ear on the first bull and, if he had killed the second bull at the first intent, he would have been awarded a tail on the second bull. That bull was "Costurero" from Garfias's ranch.
That is why he was hired for the 93-94 bullfights' season. That was a good season for him: He fought six times in which he was awarded four ears.
In the 94-95 bullfights' season he got the figure title. He indultó a bull in November 27, 1994. Bull's name was "Zalamero" from Manolo Martinez's ranch. Fifteen days after this, he was awarded the tail number 104 in the Plaza Mexico's history. Bull was "Desvelado" from the same ranch.
With this triumphs and his great dedication he reached the most higher place in mexican bullfighting.
